Jewellery cabinet makeover

Today I am going to show you how to do a jewellery cabinet makeover.

I found this little gem in a charity shop and fell in love with it! It was in need of a little tlc, but overall still in a very good condition. And they only charged me a tenner! ?

What you need:

– screwdriver,

– cloth,

– sandpaper,

– paintbrush,

– water-based paint (white),

– acrylic paint (colours of your liking),

– a piece of a sponge and

clear sealant.

Instructions:

First give the whole cabinet a good clean with a damp cloth. If there should be grease on it, then put a little drop of washing up liquid on your cloth.

Then take your screwdriver and take everything off that’s screwed in. In this case the door, the top, the glass and the magnets. The handles can be unscrewed sometimes as well.

Next lightly sand the whole cabinet and the pieces down. When working with sandpaper on wood, please always go with the grain of the wood. Never against it!

Now clean the dust off that the sanding has caused.

Make sure everything is dry and then apply the first coat of paint evenly. Depending on how much you want to cover the old colour, you will have to apply 2 or 3 coats.

Once the paint has dried, I took the yellow acrylic paint and applied it with the piece of sponge on the sides, top, door and the draws. You use the sponge to dab the paint on. I show you the door as an example.

Let this coat dry, then apply the green in the same way. Dab more on some places and less on others. This is totally down to how you like it most. As long as the paint is fresh, you can always use a lightly damp cloth to quickly wipe paint off again where you think you applied too much.

The distressing is still coming, so don´t overdo wiping paint off again…

Once the last coat is dry, take the sandpaper and lightly rub to distress the paint.

Obviously, you can leave it as it is as well. This technique allows every single piece to be “individual”.

The only thing left now, is to apply one last coat: the sealer. Here again it depends on your taste: you can give the cabinet a shiny look or get a mat sealant.
