Whenever you go to an influencer’s page on social media or read a blog about healthy eating, or losing weight, you might come across the term “clean eating”. Clean eating is emphasised as a way to lose weight, and lead a healthy lifestyle in general. However, the term is not very self-explanatory, given that literally it would just mean eating clean, washed food, that does not contain any dirt, or germs.

So what does clean eating really mean? Here is all you need to know about it.

Clean eating is a diet plan or a diet fat, based on the belief that eating whole foods, in their natural or ‘clean’ state, while avoiding processed foods such as refined sugar can offer certain health benefits. Eating fresh food, and reducing dependence on frozen, oily and processed foods is the mantra of the “clean eating” diet. It may have certain health benefits like weight loss, reduced risk of diseases and others. However, the sustainability of the diet is questionable.

Clean Eating also comes in various variations. While some people do it the normal way, and increase their consumption of whole foods, while cutting down on processed foods, some people may also exclude either one or all of these types of foods from their diet – gluten, grains, and dairy. Some people advocate the consumption of raw food, a food pattern similar to the Paleo diet.

Is Clean Eating a sustainable diet plan?

While it is subjective if one is able to follow a diet pattern of clean eating in the long run or not, it also depends on the kind of clean eating they are undertaking. If it only involves cutting down on processed foods, it is pretty sustainable. However, excluding dairy or grains from their diet may lead to certain deficiencies and low energy. The sustainability of clean eating also depends on the lifestyle, level of activity, and other health conditions of a person.
